The Canadian Jewish Labour Committee strongly condemns the antisemitic violence targeting Jewish communities in Toronto this past week. Within days, three Toronto-area synagogues were struck by gunfire. These attacks must be unequivocally condemned.

We call on union leadership across Canada to speak out clearly against these attacks and stand with Jewish communities at this moment.

Leadership fails when solidarity is offered to some members and communities but withheld from others. Union leadership has repeatedly failed to adequately address violence against Jewish people and has, at times, appeared to rationalize criminal acts targeting Jews and to signal support for organizations whose actions and rhetoric have fuelled hostility toward Jewish communities.

While Jewish communities reel from these attacks, we wait for union leadership to say something worthy of the moment. Jewish workers and their communities deserve the same solidarity and moral clarity unions rightly offer when any other community is targeted. Solidarity cannot be selective.
