About Us
Our mission is to unite Jewish workers across Canada’s labour movement by fostering inclusion, combatting antisemitism, and championing engagement and solidarity.
Our Principles
Remaining Member-driven: Jewish CJLC members of the labour movement from across Canada will set the agenda and activities.
Recognizing Antisemitism: The CJLC uses the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism, which includes illustrative examples to help identify contemporary antisemitism. This ensures that the challenges faced by Jewish workers within and beyond the labour movement are both recognized and addressed.
Combatting Antisemitism: Every worker, including Jewish workers, deserves a secure workplace and union environment that is free from harassment and discrimination. The CJLC engages with Canadian labour leaders, community figures, and political representatives at all levels to advance these goals and ensure the environment is supportive and inclusive.
Supporting Jewish Workers: The CJLC is dedicated to supporting members in exercising their rights. Jewish union members deserve the same support from their unions as any other minority group and, like any other member of a union or professional association, they have the right to all the protections afforded by collective agreements, union policy, or legislation. Their concerns about discrimination should be addressed with the same seriousness and urgency as those of any other union member.
Building Bridges within Labour: The CJLC bridges the gap between the Jewish labour community and the broader labour movement, ensuring that Jewish workers’ voices are heard and respected, and their issues addressed effectively.
Complementing – Not Replacing – Unions: The CJLC supports Jewish workers in ways that complement the role of existing unions. It does not replace any union’s obligation to support its members, including the union’s obligations for collective bargaining, union-delivered training, and grievance claims processes.
Maintaining Political Neutrality: The CJLC’s focus is serving Jewish workers’ interests, remaining non-partisan, and committing to remaining neutral. The CJLC values support from various sources across Canada, including individuals, unions, businesses. community organizations, and political parties.
