The CJLC welcomes Fred Hahn’s announcement
The Canadian Jewish Labour Committee, along with many CUPE members, welcomes Fred Hahn’s announcement that he will not seek re-election as president of CUPE Ontario. While he served the union for many years, his leadership was too often defined by division rather than unity and by a failure to carry out the core responsibility of a union president: advocating for all workers in Ontario. The result was deep fractures within a union that exists to represent and protect every member.
His resignation message followed a familiar pattern, filled with self-serving platitudes. Rather than focusing on the core issues facing workers in Ontario, Hahn once again chose to amplify his personal, polarizing geopolitical positions as his platform for leadership, which many Jewish members have long raised serious concerns about.
That final communication reinforced long-standing concerns about his leadership. Throughout his presidency, many Jewish members reported feeling marginalized and unsafe within their own union. His repeated promotion of divisive political positions, combined with actions that resulted in censure by CUPE’s National Executive and ongoing internal conflict, detracted from the fundamental responsibility of a union president: to represent and unite all members.
CUPE Ontario represents more than 300,000 members within a national union of over 800,000 workers. Its leadership must ensure that every member, regardless of identity or ideological viewpoint, feels respected, represented, and safe. We hope this moment marks the beginning of renewed leadership for CUPE Ontario, grounded in accountability, inclusion, and a renewed commitment to representing workers, strengthening workplaces, and uniting members around shared labour values.
