Statement of Principles

Our mission is to unite Jewish workers in fostering inclusion, combating antisemitism, and championing engagement and solidarity across Canada’s labour movement. In support of this mission, we adhere to the following principles:

  1. Member Driven: Jewish members of the labour movement across Canada have united to form Canadian Jewish Labour Committee, and will determine its ongoing agenda and activities.
  2. Recognizing Antisemitism: CJLC adheres to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism, which outlines various forms of hostility and discrimination against Jewish people. This definition helps in identifying and addressing antisemitism effectively, ensuring that the challenges faced by Jewish workers are recognized and addressed within the labour movement and beyond.
  3. Combating Antisemitism: Every worker, including Jewish workers, deserves a secure workplace and union environment free from harassment and discrimination. We engage with Canadian labour leaders, community figures, and political representatives at all levels to advance these goals and ensure a supportive and inclusive environment.
  4. Support for Jewish Workers: Jewish union members are entitled to the same support from their unions as any other minority group. Their concerns regarding discrimination should be addressed with the same seriousness and urgency as those of any other union member. Jewish union members have a right to all protections afforded by collective agreements, union policy, or legislation, just like any other member of a union or professional association. CJLC is dedicated to supporting members in exercising their rights.
  5. Building Bridges Within Labour: The CJLC is bridging the gap between the Jewish labour community and the broader labour movement, ensuring that the voices of Jewish workers are heard, respected, and addressed effectively.
  6. Complementing, Not Replacing, Unions: CJLC is dedicated to supporting Jewish workers in a manner that complements, rather than replaces, the role of existing unions. It does not replace any union’s obligation to provide support to members, including the union’s obligations for collective bargaining, union-delivered training, and grievance claims processes, among other union obligations.
  7. Political Neutrality: CJLC values support from diverse sources across Canada, including individuals, unions, businesses, community organizations, and political parties. While we appreciate and support our allies, CJLC remains committed to maintaining neutrality and will not endorse or align with any political party. Our focus is on serving the interests of Jewish workers.

Note: In this context, the term “union” is intended to encompass unions, professional associations or similar bodies influencing workers’ rights.
